Rebecca Welsh (or simply "Becky") is a playable character in both the original Rumble Roses in 2004 and sequel Rumble Roses XX in 2006.

She fights under the moniker of "The Rumble Bunny". Her Japanese voice actress is Hitomi Nabatame. She was dubbed by Peggy Woo in the first game (who also provided her singing voice during her intro), with Kate Higgins voicing her in the sequel (although Peggy Woo did the singing for the character in the game).[1][2][3]

Becky can be unlocked in the first Rumble Roses by completing Candy Cane's story-line or through the Vow system. In Rumble Roses XX she emerges after Candy Cane is defeated by Miss Spencer ten times without loosing) in one-on-one matches.

Background[]

"My teacher convinced me to return to school. Now I'm really into it... I'm in the prime of my youth! And to add another extra-curricular [activity] to my record, I joined the cheerleading squad. This outfit is ridiculous, but I suppose it is what it is! I've turned over a new leaf! ...I'm going to make these the best times of my life! And I'm gonna make you sweat!"

-Becky[4]

Rebecka Welsh is the Babyface alter-ego of Candy Cane. More specifically, Becky could be viewed as an extremely idealized version of the girl. She's happy, bursting with enthusiasm, as well as being academically successful and popular in school. Put another way: Becky is what Candy Cane could be with a nurturing environment and the support of the people around her (such as Miss Spencer).

Becky Spazzing

Becky Spazzing Out

Becky credits her Face-turn to Miss Spencer, who convinced her to return to school. Given how happy and successful she now is, it's likely that he transformation happened after winning the Tournament. She explains that she's now "busy with studying and wrestling." She also joined the school's Cheerleading Squad, apparently taking it to heart and basing her new wrestling persona around it. She continues to wrestle, and enjoys in-wring friendships with both Miss Spencer and Yasha.[5]

While not an official tag-team in the second game, Becky and Yasha's partnership is so good that the two have unique moves that only they can perform together.

Personality[]

In contrast with her alter-ego, Becky is cheerful, perky, and outgoing. She has fully embraced her new Babyface persona- eager to make friends and prove herself to others. Her dramatic transformation has given her strong sense of right and wrong, and allowed her to ally herself with the similar-minded Yasha.

Becky has come to admire Miss Spencer, remarking in the first game (during the interview) that Spencer is the person she most wants to spend time with. She's also very happy now in school: "...I'm really into it, busy with studying and wrestling. I'm in the prime of my youth!" She even joined the school's cheerleading squad, explaining to the interviewer "I joined the cheerleading squad. This outfit is ridiculous, but I suppose it is what it is! I've turned over a new leaf! ...I'm going to make these the best times of my life!"

Becky Normal Intro v2

Becky and her crew hits the ramp!

Her new found positivite outlook is also reflected in her antics, both in and out of the wring. The anger and rage that her previous self showed has largely melted away. Though she prefers not to dwell on her past, and at times seems to still be adjusting to her new relationship with Miss Spencer. Although, in her ending scene Becky suddenly slaps away Miss Spencer's hand. Declaring: "I'm not cut out for this! To hell with school! I am who I am..." Becky then makes a punching motion toward the camera as it freezes on her ending. It's unclear if shes still adjusting, or if she's reverting back to her alter ego once again.

Becky perhaps most shows her new enthusiasm in her arrivals. She shows up to high-energy music, dressed in her cheerleading outfit and and flanked by two other girls. Both her regular and Super Star introductions spotlight her high-flying gymnastic and cheerleading moves, though her Super Star intro also showcases her doing baton dancing in the wring. In both games, Becky provides the vocals for her intro.

In XX alongside the drastic change in look Becky seems to be far less "girly" and bubbly compared to her PS2 counterpart. While she is still usually nice and friendly she sounds notably more aggressive in the ring. She also uses words such as "ass" when angered and calls the player "stupid" when she is angry and what she had to do as a penalty in a queens game. Becky also does some underhanded tactics in the ring such as tickle her opponent and rakes their eyes in some attack sequences. It is possible that this version of Becky was supposed to be the result of her PS2 ending where she doesn't quite return to being Candy Cane but can channel her alter ego more frequently when she is pushed into it.

Appearance[]

Becky Norm v1

Beck has dirty-blond hair, blue eyes, and notably pale skin (even more so than her alter-ego). Because she has such a fair complexion, her makeup is much more subdued now- including pale pink lipstick and blush. Though for obvious reasons, she doesn't wear any jewelry.

Becky still keeps her hair up in collar-length twin ponytails- just as her previous incarnation had done. Her also still keeps her bangs long in the front, the ends being level with her eyebrows. She still has a slender figure (with smaller breasts and tapered hips). As a cheerleader and performer, there is much more emphasis on her overall figure and muscle tone.

Her regular in-wring costume is a cheerleading outfit. It includes a fairly typical tight white and orange cheerleading tank top; with white, cinnamon and orange trim running along the edges. He name "BECKY" is written across the front, in large bright blue letters with white and orange outlines. She also wears an orange pleated cheerleading skirt, with a white and cinnamon trim on the fringe and hemline. The outfit does a good job of showing off her legs and her stomach, while being more practical.

As a cheerleader, Becky wears large elbow and knee pads- solid white, with a lot of visible padding. However, she doesn't wear gloves when fighting... Making her one of the few girls who wrestles barehanded in matches (the others being Makoto and Aigle). Instead of boots or martial arts footware, she wears solid white high-top athletic shoes (that lace up in the front). She also wears thick white socks that stop below her calves.

Becky SS1 v1

Super Star Becky

When Becky wins enough matches to gain at least 80% popularity, her Super Star outfit is unlocked. Unlike the fairly subdued costume she normally wears, this outfit is extremely flashy and stylized... Possibly taking inspiration from the UK Glam Rock fashion of the 1970s. Also, both the bright and guady colors and her performance are somewhat similar to the characters in the 1980s cartoon series "Jem and The Holograms".[6][7]

Becky's ponytails are now held by blue star-shaped hair-ties. A long gold segmented earring hangs down from her right ear, with a gold star fixed to the end of it. She wears a pale metallic blue and white choker around her neck, complete with a gold broach fixed to it- also in the shape of a star. Her left eye has shiny silvery-blue paint (with a dark blue edge) around it, done in the shape of a starburst. She has light metallic blue and gold arm bands over the lower halves of her forearms.

The central part of the outfit is a shiny metallic aquamarine one-piece, with a pair of tight bright orange (spandex?) shorts visible below the base. It has a low back, while narrow straps loop aroun the neck and the front plunges down to show off a fair amount of her cleavage. The garment has white, gold, and teal stars dispersed across it. "Becky" is written diagonally across the front (SW to NE) in bright red letters, with white and dark blue outlines. And a bronze-colored shooting star in her lift hip. The bottom few inches is a shiny white color, with devides in it.

The final parts of the outfit includes a pair white knee pads with bright white stars on them. Becky also wears knee-hair boots (the same bright shade of white as the knee pads), with zips running up the inner sides. Aquamarine padding runs down the back of the boots- until it merges into the matching large aquamarine wedge heals and treds.

Becky posing in Bikini (2x) v1

Becky posing at the beach

When she's taking part in Queen's Matches (or Mad Mud Matches, in the first game), Becky wears a showy bikini-style two-piece. She also wears a pair of dark cut-off jean shorts and a sandals.

Interestingly, her swimsuit is more revealing then tha one worn by her alter-ego. Now outside and on the beach, her pale skin is especially noticeable the strong sunlight.

Both the top and (partially visible) bottom are shiny silver, with dark red edges and straps. The straps of the bikini top tie around her neck and behind her back. Most of the bottom (aside from the straps) is covered by the pair of shorts that she wears to her matches, which stop just below her backside. Aside from this, she also wears a standard-looking pair of sandals to the wring as well.

Becky is in fact one of only two of the fighters in the game to wear something over her bikini bottom (the other person being Sgt. Clemets, who also wears a pair of similar-looking jean short shorts over hers).

Gameplay[]

Attributes[]

BeckySuplexAisha

Becky performing a german suplex on Aisha.

Pros[]

  • Very good movement, while slower than Benikage, Becky still has good movement and is more agile than any other Rose as she performs actions like climb the ropes and exit/enter the ring faster than others. Despite this she still shares some animations and time to finish with the other Roses in some actions such as getting weapons outside the ring.
  • Very good reversal game.
  • A good amount of flexibility, making her good at enduring submissions.
  • Two very fast taunts in left and up on the left stick.
  • Up X leaves opponent groggy for a prolonged time. This allows Becky to do her left taunt after connection for meter and still perform her next action,
  • Good damage on strikes and striking grapples.
  • Many grapples leave opponent in a pinfall position.
  • Down X is a leg sweep that allows Becky to escape grapple attempts alongside some strikes and even Killer/Lethal move attempts if timed right. It also leaves the opponent staggering for a while that leaves Becky's opponent in the perfect range for a Becky-Rana.
  • Strikes without additional attributes come out rather fast while slower strikes have additional benefits if they connect.
  • Very good running strikes.
  • The combination of up X and side taunt will allow Becky to have Killer move meter quite often.
  • Side Step longest reaching amongst the Roses, Only Lady X Subsistance's is better due to invincibility
  • Her wrestling style could be used just as easily in Street Fights with how fast she can build meter making Becky the only frail Rose who not only can be good in Street Fights but actually excel in said game mode. Her lethal attack also has one of the easiest activations for the mode.
Vs210723-014

Becky is prone to fall victim to moves like Special Lesson which give her opponent meter multiple times per usage as Becky is tied for giving most meter, meaning another usage of the same lethal afterwards is likely.

Cons[]

  • Second worst stamina in the game, only higher than Benikage.
  • Gives just as much Killer Move meter per hit as Benikage which is well above average, this makes Becky more vulnerable to "stackable" lethal attacks such as Special Lesson and weapon based lethal attacks as her opponents will be able to use multiple of these without Becky even being able to defend herself.
  • Struggles in multi Rose 3 and 4 way matches as she has below average damage output alongside CPU opponents will often use their Killer/Lethal/Humiliation moves on her due to her frailty alongside often try and pin her.
  • Has no "burst damage" as all her strongest attacks are single hits with similar levels of damage.
  • Can take a while to put away opponents
  • Submission ability is downright horrible, won't be winning matches with normal submissions unless opponent is a human player who literally isn't pressing anything.
  • Chicken Wing Cheer Lock has poor synergy with the rest of her moveset and will take multiple applications before the opponent taps out.
  • Her killer and lethal moves while she can use them quite often they are quite weak and will take multiple applications before Becky can put her opponent away.
  • Has difficulty kicking out of "leverage pins" where her limbs are physically restrained such as Detached-Suplex and Variegat Wolf.
  • While her flexibility is good she still goes down fast to submissions that also cause high amounts of damage while the submission is applied such as Makoto's up Y submission.
  • While very useful up X and down X leave Becky very vulnerable and unable to reverse if attacks hit.
  • As she depends on strikes and has low defense reversals will wear her down alongside the usual humiliation they provide.
  • Very poor humiliation playstyle, weak in pure humiliation game modes.
  • No official team partner, has a Double X Move with Yasha but that team has the second worst and top worst stamina Roses making them easy to outlast.
  • Roses with high burst damage and Lady X Subsistance could leave Becky ready for a 3 count with just a few applications due to her low defense.
  • Very vulnerable to weapon lethals due to how much meter per hit she gives and how much damage they cause Becky.

Superstar[]

Pros[]

  • More strikes than regular Becky with grapples.
  • Gains a multihitting strike grapple when the opponent is down, doing more damage than regular Becky overall.
  • Extreme Becky-Rana stronger than Becky-Rana and ends with a pin attempt.
  • Less submissions which work better for Becky's playstyle
  • More damage helps in Street Fights
  • Retains regular Becky's movement
  • Has burst damage while regular Becky doesn't
  • Extreme Becky-Rana uses more screen time than most pinfall attempts with the cutscene cinematic ending at the 2 count after Becky sits on her opponent. While this has no effect in normal 1 on 1 modes it gives opponents much less time than regular pinfalls to break up the attempt as they only have 1 second to break up the Extreme Becky Rana pin attempt compared to the usual 3.

Cons[]

  • Still just as frail as regular Becky
  • Humiliation game just as bad as regular Becky
  • Submissions and Chicken Wing Cheer Lock still just as weak as regular Becky's
  • Loses regular Becky's utility strikes in up X and down X with new and less useful attacks.

Fighting Style[]

BeckyAcrobat

Becky's acrobatic style allows her to deliver flashy moves

Becky's fighting style is somewhat similar to her alter-ego's, but with much less of the focus on humiliation build-up and fouls. Instead, her focus in more on fast striking and grappling. Her moves are also have a very acrobatic style to them and require some degree of planning to perform- with many of her striking attacks having a fairly specific range to them. Her running speed is third only to Lady X Subsistance and Benikage.

Vs230605-028

Becky using her acrobatic skills and flexibility to drop her body weight onto her opponent's knees.

Because of this, if one of her elaborate attacks fails to make contact, she can end up veering off course and being left exposed to the counter-attacks of her opponent. Because of her small size, Becky is also weak against the strikes and submissions of strength-based fighters. Because of her limited physical strength, much of her focus is on inflicting damage and not on performing submission holds. Despite these limitations, if used correctly, she can still be a very strong fighter.

Her grapples are quite effective, and she is good at performing pins. These two factors can make her a challenging opponent in matches. Becky is best suited to fighting in regular match types, as she's at a disadvantage in Street Fights and Humiliation Matches. Overall Becky can be considered a "Fragile Speedster" style of characters with her ability to take hits just barely above Makoto and Benikage's but still being frailer than the "default" Reiko and opponents getting a good amount of meter per hit against with her. This makes her especially weak against attacks that could be chained together such as Special Lesson or weapon Lethals that build meter while hitting her as Becky will give more per hit to her opponent which in turn will allow them to hit Becky with more consecutive attacks than most other Roses.

In a way while Benikage is the game's "fastest" Rose with the fastest movement Becky instead is the most agile. Her actions generally being among the fastest and least girly such as climbing to the top turnbuckle, exiting and entering the ring and other non shared among the Roses actions Becky performing them much faster than the others. Somewhat fittingly Becky and Benikage both are the game's more fragile Roses as a trade.

Game Mode Performance[]

Vs230514-028

Becky recovering after losing a story mode match in the Playstation 2 version.

Works Well in:[]

  • Street Fight: Becky's wrestling style translates directly to the mode and she could constantly deliver lethal moves, though her frailty and meter-giving is still an issue
  • Skyscraper (non PHM): Matches here have no weapons, which usually can make quick work of Becky and allow their users to stack lethal moves on Becky so wrestling here could even the odds in Becky's favor
  • Queen's Match: While there are weapons outside the ring these grant the user no unique benefits so they will not be as devastating to Becky if she gets hit by one. Roses who begin with weapons will not have them here.

Performs decent in:[]

  • Regular Matches: Becky tends to neither be at a disadvantage nor advantage here, it is more matchup dependent. She may perform well against Roses such as Reiko and Makoto but she could struggle against high defense Roses such as Dixie or high damage ones like Aisha.
  • Tag Matches: Becky while frail her speed allows her to return to action after a tag attack faster than most other Roses when she is controlled by the AI. Doesn't have any official partner.

Avoid:[]

  • PHM Matches: Becky has a poor humiliation buildup game and her lethal will require multiple applications to the opponent before they will tap out. Avoid. Becky CAN use her good reversal ability to attempt to reverse H-Moves that target better areas Becky damages during normal gameplay compared to Chicken-Wing Cheer Lock but this is unreliable.

Matchups[]

Becky generally has the advantage. While Reiko has more defense and comparable flexibility, Becky's ability to constantly deliver lethal attacks out damages Reiko's own output. Becky should take care of having her back to Reiko as the free damage of the atomic drop plus it's follow up will easily take a toll on Becky's longevity, and the stun from the atomic drop makes Becky easy prey to be set up for an angel dive. Aside from this Becky has superior movement, damage and reversibility. Both are bad at PHM matches but this is the only time Reiko has an advantage as by the time Becky is humiliated by Reiko she will be sufficiently softened for a humiliation tap out.

Overall as Becky's entrance music states "Nevermind Reiko", Becky either is superior at best or evenly matches Reiko at worst in most game modes except PHM, where both Roses don't belong anyway.

Rowdy Reiko is generally Reiko but better, her weapon can make short work of Becky and Becky is a prime target for stacked weapon lethal attacks from Rowdy due to how much meter per hit Becky gives her opponent. Try and fight Rowdy in the Skyscraper or Queen's match to take away her weapon. Even in these modes Rowdy is more dangerous than her normal counterpart due to much better humiliation building. Still despite this Becky still has the general advantage in most modes and with her flexibility she should be able to escape a few Cobra Locks from Rowdy before she has to give in. Avoid wrestling Rowdy in a PHM match, she has the clear advantage.

No one has the real advantage here, her submission and damage dealing ability is superior to yours but you have comparable reversal ability and while you do less damage per hit your damage is more constant. The number 1 threat to Becky is Secret Technique which will highly damage and humiliate her. Becky will also give Benikage a not so negligible amount of meter when she is victimized by said attack, which will leave Benikage very close to being able to deliver another one to Becky or even stack them on Becky while she can't get up. Becky's standard playstyle of Up Y and taunt supplemented by Becky-Rana's likewise will also make quick work of Benikage. Down Y Sweep when sweetspotted helps against Benikage's superior speed by stumbling her. This match generally is decided by who uses their great reversal ability better, though Benikage has the clear advantage in a PHM match.

Similar to Benikage but easier, Yasha has superior movement to Becky but Becky has more agility (with a longer reaching side step), while Benikage moves around faster Becky will perform unique actions quicker. Yasha lacks Benikage's burst damage but does more damage per reversal which against Becky adds up. Both Roses also give the same meter per hit to each other but Becky has a higher ability to take damage, though she isn't exactly a tank. Still Becky benefits more here as Yasha will take less punishment before Becky could start her constant lethal attacks, Becky doesn't have any special considerations here and just has to play her general game.

This can't be sugarcoated, Miss Spencer has the clear advantage. Since Becky is tied for most meter per hit given to her opponent combined with Miss Spencer's atomic drop infinite this means that Miss Spencer will have access to her lethal attack before Becky is humiliated and gets a second chance to fight back. Becky needs to avoid having her back turned to Miss Spencer at all times though Miss Spencer has grapples that will force Becky to have her back turned to her teacher. The best advice is for Becky to use her good reversal ability to not let Miss Spencer atomic drop her even once.

Notably the matchup changes against the Superstar variation as this version of Miss Spencer, due to Miss Spencer lacking her infinite. This version (not counting the atomic drop) hits harder per hit though theoretically Becky should be able to handle some hits. The biggest threat to Becky is staying on the floor while SS Miss Spencer has Special Lesson as Miss Spencer will gain a good amount of lethal meter (though not enough to fill a bar from zero it will still be notable how much she gains) per time she uses it on Becky, allowing Miss Spencer to "unload" special lessons on Becky and leave Becky ready for a 3 count when Miss Spencer runs out of usable meter. Aside from this notable danger Becky can just play her usual game to defeat Miss Spencer.

A little less dangerous than Miss Spencer due to no infinite, but her whip lethal is very stackable on Becky due to the meter-per hit Attempt to face her in stages where Roses do not get to start with their weapons, as this will favor Becky's much more fair way of wrestling.

Overall Becky can just play her usual game of using Up Strike and taunting to build meter. Avoid PHM matches as Mistress can humiliate Becky quite quickly and Becky's own humiliation/submission abilities do not come close to matching Mistress's. Be warned even in regular matches Mistress's strike attacks are still strong enough to pose a threat to Becky due to her low defense.

Killer Move[]

Cyclone-Rana

Cyclone-Rana

  • Cyclone-Rana: An aerial throw that utilizes Becky's acrobatic abilities. The move starts with Becky's opponent's lifting her up in the air. But when Becky is airborne, she flips forward and lands with both of her legs on her opponent's shoulders. Becky then performs a backflip to swing through her opponent's open legs, dragging the opponent into a forced somersault and causing them to land on their head. As her opponent falls on their back, Becky sits on top of them, hooks their leg and covers them for the pin.
    • This move can only be executed by have at least 1 meter filled.

Trivia[]

  • Becky's anthem B.E.C.K.Y. involved the most contributors and production staff. Konami Sound Producer Yuichi Asami (credited as "U1-Asami") composed it and co-wrote the lyrics with the Producer Akari Uchida. The vocals were done by Peggy Woo in the first game. The first game's manual credits the "Cheerleading" (presumably the motion-capture work) to a group called the "Konami TYO Girls Rumble Roses".[8][9]
  • Uvs111103-002

Becky's costume from the PS2 Game.

Unusually, Becky's costume changed dramatically between the two games, with her cheerleading outfit going from blue to orange. She also wore Candy Cane's Heart Pendant (as shown in the picture) in the first game.
  • In both games, Becky is one of only three unlockable Babyfaces, since she started out as a Heel. In the second game, she is one of only three alter-egos that is unlocked under special circumstances. In both cases, the other two are Yasha and Noble Rose.
  • Rebecka Welsh always fights her matches under a stage name (Candy Cane/Becky), despite the fact that her real name has always been commonly known. The only other character to do this is Reiko's older sister Fujiko Hinomoto (aka. Evil Rose/Noble Rose).
  • Her appearence is somewhat identicle to Juliet Starling, the protagonist of the game Lollipop Chainsaw. As both are blond, busty, and are Cheerleaders.
  • Becky's hair color tends to be rather inconsistently portrayed, she is brunette in the first game and blond in the second one. Some merchandise of her PS2 incarnation has her with blonde hair while her loading screen portrait in the second game has her as a brunette while still in her otherwise blonde model.
